How to restore BusyCal unique data types when migrating calendars to iCloud

BusyCal unique data types (such as Stickys, Journals, Graphics, Attachments, Tags, and Recurring To Dos) will be preserved when migrating from MobileMe to iCloud. But unique data types stored on local calendars, LAN calendar subscriptions, or Google Calendar subscriptions will be lost when migrating to iCloud. You may recover the unique data types by restoring from a BusyCal backup and re-importing the calendars to iCloud, as follows:

  1. Disconnect from iCloud — Disconnect from your iCloud account in BusyCal by double-clicking on it in the left sidebar to open the Server Settings dialog and click Disconnect. The iCloud account and all of its calendars will be removed from BusyCal but the calendars will be preserved on iCloud.
  2. Restore from a backup — BusyCal automatically backs up your calendar data daily. To restore from a backup in BusyCal, select File > Restore BusyCal, then select the most recent BusyCal backup that was created prior to transitioning to iCloud and click Open. A sheet will appear listing the calendars in the backup file. You don't need to restore any calendars that were previously hosted on MobileMe. The only calendars you need to restore are local calendars (listed under ON MY MAC), LAN calendars and Google Calendars. Select one or more calendars and click Restore. The calendars will be restored as local calendars along with any unique data types that were lost during the iCloud transition.
  3. Reconnect to iCloud — Select Connect to iCloud/CalDAV Server from the Calendar menu and enter your Apple ID and password. Your iCloud calendars will begin syncing.
  4. Move restored calendars to iCloud — Control-click on one of the restored calendars with the unique data types that you want to move to iCloud and choose Move to iCloud. The calendar will be moved to iCloud and begin syncing. Repeat this process for each calendar you wish to move to iCloud. This may take a while. Please be patient.
  5. Note: iCloud requires you to store Events and To Dos on separate calendars, so each calendar will be transformed into two calendars on iCloud — one for Events and one for To Dos. A To Do calendar will be indicated with a checkmark next to its name.

  6. Delete old calendars on iCloud — Once you've successfully moved the restored calendars to iCloud, you may delete the old calendars on iCloud that are missing the unique data types by control-clicking on them in BusyCal and choosing Delete.
  7. Note: You will be unable to delete your default iCloud calendar. To solve this, login to icloud.com with Safari. The first calendar listed in the left sidebar is your default calendar. Drag one of your other calendars to the top of that list to set it as the default calendar. Then you should be able to delete the old default calendar.
