Why does BusyContacts launch automatically?

If you have both BusyCal and BusyContacts installed, you may notice that launching BusyCal sometimes automatically opens BusyContacts in the background.

Why This Happens

BusyCal and BusyContacts are designed to work together as an integrated CRM solution. They share data to provide enhanced functionality, such as:

  • Linking Events to Contacts: Viewing a contact in BusyContacts shows their related events from BusyCal.
  • Activity List: BusyContacts displays recent calendar activity for each person.
  • Birthdays & Anniversaries: BusyCal can fetch birthday and anniversary details directly from BusyContacts.

Because of this deep integration, the two apps often communicate with each other. If BusyCal needs to fetch data that is managed by BusyContacts (like a specific contact detail or a linked event), macOS may launch BusyContacts to fulfill that request.

How to Stop It

If you prefer to keep BusyContacts closed until you manually open it, you can try the following:

1. Disable "Show Birthdays calendar"

If BusyCal is set to show birthdays, it may query BusyContacts for this data.

  1. Open BusyCal > Settings > General.
  2. Uncheck Show Birthdays calendar.
  3. Uncheck Show Anniversaries calendar.

2. Check "Contacts" Integration

If you have the "Contacts" field enabled in the Info Panel, BusyCal may try to link events to people in your address book.

  1. Open BusyCal > Settings > Info Panel.
  2. Uncheck Contacts.

3. Check for Linked Events

If you have recently viewed or edited an event that is explicitly linked to a Contact (via the "Contacts" field), BusyCal might be trying to refresh that link.
