Tags are not syncing (or they disappear after sync)

If tags are being removed from events (or don’t appear consistently across devices), the cause is usually the calendar service you’re syncing with.

BusyCal can store tags in standard CalDAV fields (CATEGORIES) and/or in extended properties, but some servers strip these properties during sync (or don’t expose them to third-party apps in certain scenarios).

Common causes

  • CalDAV server limitations: Some servers remove tags/extended properties during sync.
  • Shared calendars: Tag syncing can vary depending on permissions and server behavior.
  • Meeting invitations: Some services strip tags from meeting invitations, especially for invitees.

What you can do

  • Use My Tags if you want tags to remain local/private on your Mac (and not be affected by server sync).
  • If you’re on Microsoft 365:
    • Legacy EWS accounts mapped tags to Outlook Categories.
    • Microsoft Graph accounts use a dedicated Categories field for Outlook category syncing.
