Why are old Outlook emails appearing as tasks in BusyCal?

Open one of the unexpected tasks and check its Calendar field. If it belongs to Flagged Emails under your Microsoft 365 or Outlook account, it comes from a flagged email in Outlook.

Microsoft makes flagged emails available as tasks in its built-in Flagged Emails list. BusyCal can sync this list alongside your other Microsoft task lists.

Why did these tasks appear now?

Adding or reconnecting a Microsoft account using Microsoft Graph can bring in task lists that were not included with an older Exchange connection. BusyCal enables a newly discovered Flagged Emails list by default, so it may appear even if you only expected to see your calendar and usual tasks.

Older items that are still incomplete and have a past due date appear as overdue tasks. If you carry uncompleted tasks forward, they can also appear on today in your calendar. The emails themselves may be much older than the date they first appeared in BusyCal.

Hide the Flagged Emails list

Turn off syncing for this list if you do not want to see flagged emails in BusyCal. Your other calendars and task lists can stay enabled.

On iPhone or iPad

  1. Open BusyCal > Settings > Accounts.
  2. Select your Office 365 or Outlook account, then tap Calendars.
  3. Tap the info button beside Flagged Emails.
  4. Turn off Enable Calendar.

On Mac

  1. Right-click Flagged Emails under your Microsoft account in BusyCal's calendar sidebar.
  2. Choose Get Info….
  3. Click Unsubscribe.

These steps hide the list's tasks and stop syncing that list on the device. They do not delete Outlook messages, change their flags, or affect your other task lists. Repeat the steps on each device where you want the list disabled.

There is no need to delete or complete the items individually just to hide them. Those edits sync back to Microsoft; disabling the list leaves them unchanged.
